SUPERIOR COMMUNICATIONS AND AT&T PULL PLUG ON "VAMPIRE" CHARGING WITH WORLD'S FIRST ZERO DRAW CHARGING SOLUTION
03/17/10
Irwindale, CA — Superior Communications, the nation’s leading accessory provider, and AT&T, team up at CTIA 2010 (March 23 – 25 in Las Vegas) to unveil the industry’s first 100% energy-efficient charging alternative — the AT&T ZERO Charger.
Customers can be a small part of a big difference with Superior’s latest charging innovation. The AT&T ZERO Charger eliminates “vampire” charging — an energy wasted from unused chargers left plugged into wall outlets when they are not charging a phone. Unlike many of today’s “vampire” chargers, the AT&T ZERO Charger has been engineered to automatically stop electricity draw once disconnected from a handset, making it 100% energy-efficient.
If 50% of US wireless subscribers use the AT&T ZERO Charger to charge their phones, the electricity saved is enough to power 12,000* homes for one year and enough money saved to brew 3 million** cups of coffee a day.
The AT&T ZERO Charger has been named a Green Solutions finalist in the CTIA Emerging Technology (E-Tech) Awards. CTIA’s fifth annual E-Tech Awards program recognizes products in 15 categories in the mobile consumer electronics, luxury mobile, applications, enterprise, green solutions and network technology. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, March 24 at 2:00 p.m. on the Exhibits Innovation Stage located in the Emerging Technology Zone on the International CTIA WIRELESS exhibit floor, North Hall.
Adding to its efficiency, the AT&T ZERO Charger can be used to charge many existing and future handheld devices — all from one outlet! Over time, this will help reduce the number of chargers produced and discarded to minimize impact on the environment.
“Because AT&T has over 80 million customers, we know the ZERO Charger will have a more significant and immediate impact — both financially and environmentally. Therefore, we were extremely motivated to develop a zero draw charger for AT&T,” said Solomon Chen, chief executive officer of Superior Communications.
The AT&T ZERO Charger will cost the same as existing chargers and will be sold in 100% recyclable packaging. It’s not only healthier for the environment, but also a great consumer value available exclusively from AT&T.
The ZERO Charger will be available in May at AT&T retail locations nationwide or at www.wireless.att.com. The ZERO Charger will be showcased at CTIA by Superior Communications (Booth 2500) and AT&T (Booth 6603).

AT&T ZERO Charger — a “small part of a BIG difference.”
*Calculation based on an active subscriber base of 220 million with plugged in chargers. Total US cell phone subscriber base is 277 million. Total standby electricity waste estimated at 273 million kwh. Electricity consumption data form Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (DOE), method of calculation from US Energy Information Administration.
**Assumption - Average coffee maker is on for 30 min. a day and brews 2 – 4 cups. Per data from energysavers.gov (DOE website) the typical wattage for a coffee maker is 1,000 watts.
